Prepay power –
know exactly where you stand

With PrePower you pay up front for your electricity – a bit like a prepay mobile. It’s a great option if you need to keep a close eye on your budget. Because you’re prepaying your electricity, you’ll know just how much you’ve spent and how much power you have left.

Fitting a Meter and Buying Electricity

  • You’ll need a special PrePower meter to be fitted at your house. We can arrange all that for you (you’ll need to own the property or get the owner’s permission). There’s a service fee for the installation

  • Once the meter’s in you can buy electricity over the phone or at your local PostShop – a minimum of $20 or a maximum of $200 at a time.

  • You’ll get a 20 digit code you enter on your meter.

  • The meter displays how many units of electricity you have left to use – so you can check it any time and make a top up when it gets low.

Who Can Get PrePower?

  • If it’s for your home and you use more than 3,000kWh of electricity a year, you should be able to qualify

  • We’ll let you know if it’s available in your region and if you meet the requirements.

  • If you or someone in your house depends on electricity for critical medical support we strongly recommend you choose a standard meter instead, so you’ll always have access to electricity. PrePower meters can self-disconnect if payment isn’t made.

  • Set up a direct debit payment, and we’ll deduct the amount of electricity purchased from your bank account. It’s a simple way to pay for your energy. Click here to print off the direct debit form and post back to us. 


Emergency Power

  • If you haven’t been able to top up your PrePower and you’re running short, you can get a small amount of emergency power to see you through. You need to be up to date with your payments and have a credit card or money in your Contact account. If you have Direct Debit set up, you can quickly use that.

  • You can then repay the amount when you purchase your next lot of power.

If you’re finding it hard to pay your bills because things are pretty tight, there are ways we can help you. The last thing you want to worry about is how to keep the lights on and the house warm.

  • SmoothPay helps you even out your energy costs so you pay the same amount throughout the year.

  • PrePower lets you prepay your electricity making it easier to keep a close eye on the energy you’re using.
